For crooked teeth or teeth with big spaces and gaps, people often pursue dental metal braces. However, metal braces are aesthetically unpleasing. There are alternatives to metal braces now that use clear aligners (transparent braces) technology that are near invisible while wearing them. Invisalign is the top brand offering clear aligners and VIP Dental Lounge was granted Invisalign’s preferred provider status in 2017. On this page, Dr. Lyuda explains what clear aligners are, what kinds of issues it can correct, and their advantages over metal braces
Advantages of Invisalign over metal braces to straighten teeth
Dr. Lyuda shares what are the different issues that can be corrected by clear aligners like Invisalign. Similar to metal braces, Invisalign can correct issues like crowding, diastema, overbite, etc.
Dr. Lyuda: Hi. My name is Dr. Lyuda and today I’m going to talk to you about Invisalign. Invisalign is an alternative to metal braces that are clear trays that you wear for two weeks and they take your teeth through a series of movements that correct the bite, close spaces, open spaces, change the rotated teeth, and give you a beautiful smile.
The advantages over metal braces is that they’re clear. You cannot see those metal brackets on your teeth, so you can still smile confidently and not be self-conscious about it.
The number two reason is that they’re removable. You can take them off, you can rinse them out, and you can clean them, and you can still keep up the same hygiene that you did before. You can still floss your teeth regularly, you can still brush them in exactly the same way as you did before.
The third reason is the cost. They’re much less expensive than traditional metal braces.
Another reason that I like these better than the braces is they’re more comfortable. Sometimes the wires get caught on our cheeks and the brackets can cause sores on our lips that we often have to put wax over braces or over the traditional brackets. These are very soft. They’re very flexible. They just move with you and they’re very, very comfortable to wear.
The cost for Invisalign varies from person to person, depending on your duration of treatment. However, we do make it affordable by offering 0% down financing plans as little as $99 a month. At VIP, we do a lot of cases of Invisalign and that’s why Invisalign has granted us a preferred provider status. What that means, if you go to their website, they will direct you to us as their preferred provider for your treatment.
The Invisalign Process at VIP Dental Lounge
At VIP Dental Lounge, we utilize the top of the line Intraoral scanner called Trios Color that is the best in class to obtain the most accurate scan of a patient’s mouth. This technology also reduces the turn around time from Invisalign to 48 hours. Within 48 hours, we can then show you a real-time simulation of how your teeth will shift over time and how long your treatment will last.
Dr. Lyuda: On the first appointment of your consultation for Invisalign we’re going to take intraoral and extraoral pictures. And then we’re going to use intraoral imaging to scan your bite and to scan your teeth, so no more goo impressions that make everyone gage and drool.
So, this is a scan that is done in 1:11 seconds and we can see all the details of the teeth and of the gums and then we’re able to also take a scan of the bite.
Before committing to the treatment plan you and I can look through the series of the tooth movement that your teeth will go through. So, this is called the ClinCheck and this is where we can talk about how long the treatment is going to take, how often you should be wearing your aligners, and what your teeth will look like at the end. And this is the time where you can point out any dislikes that you have and we can still change the treatment.
Case study 1: Overcrowding
This is an existing patient at VIP Dental Lounge undergoing the Invisalign treatment to correct a lot of crowding. Over a period of 11 months, the plan corrects any crowding or bite issues to form a perfect arch that is the end goal.
Dr. Lyuda: So, here’s another case, which is a little more complex than the one we took a look earlier. It involves several problems. Number one is a deep bite or an overbite, where you can barely see a person’s lower teeth; majority of the upper teeth are covering them, so that makes a person look a lot older. There’s definitely crowding going on. Rotated teeth, and just a bite that’s not really stable that causes some tooth damage as well.
Let’s make this a little bit bigger and take it through a series. So, we are able to also preserve a space. She’s missing a tooth, so we’re able to preserve an appropriate amount of space for an implant to go in. And some people also ask me if they have crowns or implants, can they still wear Invisalign?
The answer is yes. An implant, we obviously cannot move, and a tooth with a crown, we usually try to avoid moving, but it still is possible to move. It is well to place an attachment point on it if we need to.
So in her case, this person does have an implant that we aren’t able to move in this area. If you take a look at this side, one chief complaint or concern for this patient was that this tooth was too much in, when she smiled, it looked like she was missing a tooth.
When I actually saw her, she had a bonding placed to even all that out. Once we removed that, I could actually see what she was talking about. It looked like she was missing a tooth because of all the shadows happening.
Once it’s all complete, we’re able to see that all of the spaced is not closed and we have one harmonious arch.
Case Study 2: Diastema (spaces between teeth)
This is a teenager patient who was 14 years old at the time of first coming to VIP Dental Lounge. Dr. Lyuda initially performed a frenectomy to remove the frenulum between the front two teeth to allow for the gap between the front two teeth to close over time via Invisalign
Speaker 1: (singing)
Speaker 2: This is a case for one of our teenager patients, who’s main concern was to close spaces between his teeth. Let’s make it a little bit wider, a little bigger and take a look. He’s got some spacing in his back teeth, in his front teeth. This is the simulation that you will be seeing when you come in to take a look what your case might look like and you would like to accept it. If we press the play button it will … and it’s going to take us through a series of movements to show you where we’re hoping for him to end up at the end of treatment. This is exactly the same process that you will be able to go through with us before you decide to accept the treatment. Let’s take a look at his maxilla, which is his upper jaw. You can see the spacing between his teeth. At the end of the treatment, all that spacing is going to close and become a perfect arch.
